At Common, every decision we make comes back to connection, with people, the planet, and the communities that bring coffee to life. From the start, we knew that doing things differently meant thinking carefully about how we roast, source, and give back.
One of our earliest decisions was to invest in an electric Probat roaster. It’s not the most common of routes, at least it wasn’t in the earlier days with few in the industry use them, but it’s one that felt right. By choosing electric roasting, we’ve been able to minimise our emissions, control energy sources, and reduce our carbon footprint by drawing from renewable energy where possible. It also makes for a smoother, more consistent roast…proof that sustainability and quality can, and should, go hand in hand.
Our commitment to reducing waste doesn’t stop there. Each batch of roasted coffee leaves behind a natural by-product known as coffee chaff; light, nitrogen-rich husks that break down quickly. Instead of letting it go to waste, we share our chaff with local businesses for composting. It’s a simple exchange that closes the loop, turning what would otherwise be waste into something that nourishes the soil! A small but powerful cycle of giving back.
Beyond the roastery, our membership with 1% for the Planet connects us to a global community of like-minded businesses. It’s a constant reminder of why we started Common in the first place: to make a tangible difference through everyday action. Whether that’s donating 1% of our revenue to environmental and social causes or contributing over 14,000 cups of coffee through our partnership with InKind Direct, we believe in doing what we can, even when it isn’t the easiest choice.
For us, sustainability isn’t just a goal; it’s a practice. A series of small, intentional decisions that, together, help create a better future… one cup at a time.
