Welcome to the latest edition of our series, Common People, where we introduce you to the incredible people who make up the Common family. This time, we sat down for a coffee with our brand-new Sales and Account Manager, Kat.
What’s your go-to coffee order and what does this reveal about your personality?
I’m going to be sneaky and say 2:
Long Black is my signature drink. There are a few spots in Edinburgh that know my order, and it’s always delightful going in. Many might think oh she’s pretty straightforward, an open book, and consistent? Not quite, I enjoy a curveball, so keep reading.
Espresso Tonic – enter Kat 2.0. I tried this for the first time last year and, wow, it was a game-changer! It’s a burst of flavour and one of the most refreshing drinks out there. Perfect for a hot day.
What role does coffee play in your life and why does it matter to you?
Coffee has become a bit of a passion over the last few years, leading me to jump head first into café culture. I feel like I’ve learnt so much about the role of connection through cafe culture, and the ever present phrase ‘wanna grab a coffee?’. I’ll now share my experiences on Instagram with others to enjoy, from café décor and atmosphere to coffee, staff, and company – I try to capture it all. Each visit is a unique story, and I think that's pretty darn cool.
Which is your favourite Common roast and why?
You’re testing me here. Still pretty new to the profiles but right now I have to say the sweet roast. It's top-notch as an espresso and equally intriguing in a milk-based coffee. Who doesn’t love a little variety? With that, I’m a big fan of the bright branding and the use of the light bulb to symbolise ideation and creativity.
How does coffee fit into your idea of connection?
I’ve definitely noticed a shift in how and where people decide to meet up. Whether it’s grabbing coffee with a friend, enjoying solo time in a bustling café, or fuelling up for an all-nighter before a project deadline with mates. The idea of 'coffee' as the bridge between individuals is cool to see. I hope the late night cafe culture makes its way to the UK in a similar way to that of Europe – with the shift in priorities for many, having the option to go somewhere other than a bar / pub in the evening is important.
Can you share a memorable moment when you connected with someone over a cup of coffee?
Just one? Ha, I joke! My coffee partner-in-crime is my mum. We started virtual coffee dates when I moved to Canada years ago. I then returned to Ireland during COVID for a stint. It’s not until something is taken away do you realise the impact. Anyways, we both counted down the days until restrictions loosened so we could venture out and get a takeaway coffee. In true Irish fashion, it was pouring rain and we drove 25 minutes to the nearest café, ordered two Americanos, pulled over onto the side of the road and savored that first sip of 'freedom coffee'. Was it the best coffee ever? Absolutely not. Was it one of my favorite moments to share? Absolutely.
